TRANSPORTATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE TIPS 220

1. Learn your carbon footprint—the measure of the impact of your activities on the environment, in particular on climate change. Calculate yours at http://www.carbonfootprint.com/.

2. Buy a hybrid vehicle.

3. If you live in a city, get rid of your car and use a car-sharing arrangement such as Zipcar.

4. Carpool or rideshare. Websites such as http://www.erideshare.com/, http://www.dividetheride.com/, and http://carpoolconnect.com/support your efforts.

5. Reduce commuting and travel time by working at home one day per week, if allowed. If possible, move closer to work.

6. Buy less and use reusable grocery bags.

7. Eat locally grown produce, cutting down on the barrels of oil for fertilizer and the diesel fuel for food transport.

8. Unplug. You spend more money on electricity to power devices when off than when on. Instead of turning them off, unplug televisions, stereo equipment, computers, battery chargers, and a host of other gadgets and appliances that consume more energy when seemingly switched off.

9. Recycle aluminum. The energy saved by recycling one aluminum beverage can is enough to power a television for three hours.
